Contest Winner Announced

The time has come for the 2007 contest to draw to a close. The cut off date was 31 October 2007. The draw took place on 28 November and the winner was notified.

Congratulations to the 2007 winner: Liza van der Walt, a Graphic and Web Designer from Centurion, South Africa! She has won a wilderness walking safari of her choice in the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

We asked her a few short questions and it turns out she enjoys relaxing and also doing "something sporty", so I think a walking safari is just the perfect fit.

If you didn't yet get a chance to enter the African Safari Pictures contest yet, don't worry because the new one for 2008 has already started...

Zebras are born to blend in

On a recent guided wilderness walk in the Kruger National Park, our guide taught us something very interesting about zebras.

During the first weeks of its life, a zebra foal grows very fast - half a kg of weight per day!

But the thing that I found most interesting was that the foals' legs are as long as the adults' legs. Just have a look on the photo below.

The reason is to fool the predators. Usually predators will go for young or injured animals. But if they (lions, wild dogs...) can't see the little bodies below the "tummy level" of the adults, they can't target them as easily!
